Accessibility
A community directory is only useful if the whole community can use it. Here is where we stand, what we know is not good enough yet, and how to tell us about a problem.
Our Commitment
The Babcock Ranch Directory is built to be usable by as many people as possible, including people who browse with a screen reader, navigate by keyboard, use voice control or magnification, or need larger text and stronger contrast.
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. We are not there across the whole site yet, and we would rather say so plainly than claim otherwise. Accessibility is treated as part of building a feature, not as a clean-up task afterwards.
What We Have Built In
- • Semantic HTML headings and landmarks, so screen readers can navigate by structure.
- • Keyboard access to navigation, search, forms and buttons.
- • Visible focus indicators on interactive elements.
- • Text that reflows and stays readable when zoomed or on a small screen.
- • Form fields with associated labels, and errors announced as text rather than by colour alone.
- • Descriptive labels on icon-only buttons.
- • Business addresses, phone numbers and hours published as text, not only inside images or maps.
Known Limitations
Areas we know fall short. We are working through them, and this list is updated as things are fixed or found.
No formal audit has been completed
We have not yet had the site independently audited against WCAG 2.1 Level AA, and we do not claim conformance. This statement reflects our own review, not a certification.
Listing photographs often lack meaningful alternative text
Many images come from business owners or from Google Places without descriptions, so a screen reader may announce little more than the business name.
Maps and location features
Embedded maps are supplied by Google and are difficult to use with a keyboard or screen reader. Every listing that has an address also shows it as text, so the information is available without the map.
Colour contrast is not verified everywhere
Some secondary text, badges and placeholder text may fall below the 4.5:1 contrast ratio, particularly over photographs and coloured banners.
Complex interactive areas
The business dashboard, admin tools, image galleries and multi-step onboarding forms are the least tested areas for keyboard-only and screen-reader use.
Third-party components
Sign-in with Google, the Stripe checkout and the newsletter confirmation flow are provided by other companies, and their accessibility is outside our direct control.
Report a Barrier
If something on this site is difficult or impossible for you to use, please tell us. It is the fastest way for us to find and fix it.
Email brdirectory@cruxnyc.com with the subject Accessibility, or use our contact form.
What helps us most
- • The page address where you hit the problem.
- • What you were trying to do.
- • The browser, device and any assistive technology you were using.
None of this is required — a short note is far better than no note.
What to expect
We aim to reply within 5 business days with what we found and, where we can fix it, when. If a fix will take a while, we will tell you how to get the information or complete the task in the meantime — including doing it for you over email.
If You Cannot Use Part of the Site
Anything you can do on this site, you can ask us to do with you by email: look up a business, add or correct a listing, submit an event, or subscribe to and unsubscribe from the newsletter. Write to brdirectory@cruxnyc.com and we will handle it.
